Who?
Tobi Göbel from Germany
When do you decide to become a DJ?
Which year did you took the decision?
In 2008, I decided to become a DJ.
I listened to house and electronic music a few days earlier and suddenly I was at this huge festival in Europe and that was the first time i noticed, these casual girls and guys who mixed these great sets with those black discs. The feeling and the sound just hit my heart. I fell in love with all of this and I knew I wanted to learn and live the same thing.
How was the beginning of your DJ career?
It was my birthday, after the above mentioned festival and my only wish was to finally get the equipment. since I did not have the necessary money before. So God heard my prayers, and here it was: A cheap mixer, two cheap CDJs, a very old turntable and my own brand new headphones.I was ready to become a great and successful DJ :). Unfortunately, I did not know anything about all the buttons and regulators :).So I spent my entire birthday in my little room starting to teach myself how to mix. And beyond the birthday, and the next few months.
How was the dance scenes in your country, when you were beginners?
The techno, house and dance scene was very intense and strong in the big cities like Frankfurt, Mannheim, Cologne or Berlin at that time. In my opinion Berlin was the heart of the dance scene in Europe. Even in my hometown, which is a little smaller, the scene was present, but still nothing like that for a long time. We had a big club, one of the first techno clubs in Germany, where I became Resident-DJ a little later.
How can you describe the actual dance scenes in your town?
In my town, the scene has now spread a bit. We have a few other locations. They also offer techno, house and dance events. It is nice to see how the scene has grown and you now have more alternatives to go to if you want to dance or relax or just hang out with your friends and listen to good music.
Can you mentioned some artist and labels, which influences you in a positive way?
I was very happy about this question. I really like to talk about this. So first of all there are a lot of local Djs in my city which inspired me all along. With either their sound, or even useful tips and tricks. I am very grateful for that ! Some of them became very successful during this time, and they are now establishing themselves – both in Europe and worldwide.
Especially in the beginning I was very receptive for various Djs and labels such as Desolat, KeineMusik, KneeDeepInSound, Suara, Cocoon, Moon Harbour, Monaberry, Viva Music, Cecille, Cocolino, PlayItSayIt, Crosstown Rebels and many more. My sympathy with Berlin also grew. Here I would like to name labels and clubs such as Bar25, Sisyphos, Watergate, Goldengate, Katermukke and Berghain. The Fusion Festival also played a major role in this. Also included are i.e. Perlon or Minibar and 8Bit.
Nevertheless, I quickly noticed that I feel comfortable in a particular cause, in fact the Music On family around Marco Carola. This is what I´ve been standing for for a long time and that´s what I radiate. Of course I’m also looking forward to a few festivals and their great DJs like Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, The Martinez Brothers, Loco Dice or (Arpiar). Butch also produces and plays music that I really like.
But the feeling, the vibe, the manner and of course the music of the Music On family and Marco Carola is incomparable and my home 🙂Apart from that, I heard about the Vibe Club, and the scene in the city capital during my vacation in the Dominican Republic. And from then on my plan was to arrange my next trips, depending on your events in the country.
What are you doing actually?
Who are you working with any label or artist?
Which music format will be released?
Because of my self employment and the company’s structure for the last three years and because of my wonderful little daughter, unfortunately there was little time left for productions and intensive work with different labels or producers. But lets see what surprises the future brings. With the entrepreneurship, time will come, which I will increasingly use for productions, that´s for sure.
Last, for the new people who want to get involved in the music industry, what’s your advices?
Search for your great love and the musical direction you love. Always keep an open mind. Learn a lot from the people who have the experience. Be persistent and constant, go out partying, get to know new people and talk to them. Join people who want to become producers or Djs, allow others to have the same success that you want to have. And finally, do not miss the great feeling of vinyl mixing !
This is DJing ..
